Renata Ávila Pinto

Renata Avila Pinto is a Guatemalan lawyer specialising in data governance, intellectual property, digital trade, and privacy. As CEO of the Open Knowledge Foundation, she promotes open data policies and technologies for equitable access to knowledge. She advises governments and international organisations on digital policies. A former Stanford HAI fellow and a Center for Internet and Society affiliate at CNRS, her research is focused on commons-based governance models for digital public infrastructure and AI. She has led legal and advocacy initiatives defending freedom of expression, privacy, and access to information and the defence of whistleblowers. Ávila serves on the boards of Open Future and the Just Net Coalition; she is a Lacuna Fund steering committee member and an expert member of the UN working group on data governance at all levels.
